SEO is worth it for a small business when people search for what it sells every month, each customer is worth enough to cover the cost, and the owner can wait two to three months for results. It is not worth it yet when nobody searches for the service, or the business needs enquiries this week.
When SEO Pays Off
SEO tends to pay off when three conditions are true.
- Steady search demand: people search for your service every week, not once a year.
- Enough value per customer: one or two new customers a month cover the monthly cost.
- Time: you can keep going for at least six months, the period over which results build.
When SEO Is Not Worth It Yet
SEO is the wrong first spend in three situations.
- Almost nobody searches for what you sell, because the product is new or unknown.
- You need enquiries this week; paid ads fit that need better.
- You cannot fund it for more than a month or two.
How to Work Out the Return Before You Spend
A simple sum shows whether SEO can pay. This worked example uses round numbers for illustration only; replace them with your own.
| Step | Example | Where to find your number |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly searches for your main services in your area | 1,000 | Google Keyword Planner or an SEO tool |
| Share of those searches that click your site once you rank well | 5% = 50 visits | Your own Search Console data over time |
| Share of visits that enquire | 5% = 2.5 enquiries | Your website’s enquiry rate |
| Share of enquiries that become customers | 40% = 1 customer | Your own records |
| Value of one customer | £500 | Your average job or order value |
In this example, SEO bringing one £500 customer a month would cover a £99 to £349 monthly plan. If your numbers come out below the monthly cost, SEO is not worth it yet.

SEO, Google Ads or Both
Google Ads bring visitors from day one but stop when you stop paying; SEO builds slowly and keeps working. For most small businesses a mix works best. Our guide to SEO vs Google Ads compares them side by side.
Is SEO Worth It With AI Search?
AI answers now appear on many Google searches, and some people use AI assistants instead of search. Those answers still draw on web pages, and Google still shows normal results and map results below them. For a small business, the work that wins normal results, such as clear pages that answer questions, is also the work that gets a page cited in AI answers.
Questions
Can ChatGPT do my SEO instead?
It can help you plan pages and draft copy. It cannot make changes on your site, build citations, track rankings or read your Search Console data, which is where most of the work and the measurement happen.
How do I know if SEO is working?
Watch Search Console: indexed pages, impressions and new searches rise first, then clicks and enquiries. Our guide on how long does SEO take shows what to expect month by month.
