Technical SEO is the work that lets search engines crawl, read and index every page of a website quickly. PennyRank’s technical SEO is part of every plan from £99 a month: essential fixes on Starter, full fixes with speed and schema on Growth, and monthly monitoring on Pro.

What Technical SEO Is
Technical SEO covers the three steps Google takes before it can rank a page: crawling, where Googlebot fetches the page; rendering, where it runs the page’s code; and indexing, where it stores the page to show in results. Google Search Central describes these steps in its guide to how Search works. Problems at any step stop a page ranking, however good its content. Sites built with heavy JavaScript face extra rendering problems; see our headless SEO service.
What Our Technical SEO Fixes
These are the problems we find and fix most often on small business websites.
| Problem | Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Pages blocked from Google | Pages missing from search | Remove stray noindex tags and robots.txt blocks |
| Broken links and redirect chains | 404 errors, slow crawling | Repair links; one redirect hop at most |
| Duplicate pages | Two URLs showing the same content | Canonical tags and redirects |
| Missing or wrong sitemap | New pages found slowly | XML sitemap with live, indexable pages only |
| Slow pages | Poor Core Web Vitals on mobile | Image sizes, caching, script loading |
| Thin titles and headings | Pages ranking for nothing | Passed to on-page SEO work |
Speed and Core Web Vitals
Google measures page experience with three Core Web Vitals, and its documentation sets good scores as: Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1. Speed work is part of Growth and Pro, and covers image formats and sizes, caching, and scripts that delay the page.
Schema Markup
Schema markup is code that tells search engines what a page is about in a fixed format: a business, a service, a product, an article. We add the schema types that match each page, such as Organization, Service, Product and BreadcrumbList, on Growth and Pro, and test them in Google’s Rich Results Test.
How Our Technical SEO Works
Technical work follows four steps.
- The full audit at the start of the plan crawls the whole site; for a quick first look, see our SEO audit services.
- We take a full backup, then fix the problems in order of impact.
- We check each fix on the live site and in Google Search Console.
- Every month we re-check for new problems; on Pro, monitoring alerts us between checks.
Who Needs Ongoing Technical SEO
Every site needs a technical check, but some need it every month: online shops that add products, sites that publish often, and sites on platforms with many plugins. WordPress sites are the most common case; see our WordPress SEO services, which include monthly updates on Growth and Pro.
Technical SEO Questions
How much should I pay for technical SEO?
Technical SEO is part of every PennyRank plan: essential fixes on Starter at £99, full fixes with speed and schema on Growth at £199, and full fixes with monthly monitoring on Pro at £349.
Is technical SEO a one-off job?
No. Sites change every time a page, plugin or product is added, and new problems appear. Fixes are made in month 1, then checked every month, with active monitoring on Pro.
Will technical changes break my site?
We take a full backup before every technical change, so any change can be reversed. Changes are made one at a time and checked on the live site afterwards.
Do you need developer access?
Your website login is enough for most fixes. Some, such as server settings or custom code, need your host or developer, and we write those up as clear tasks.
